Do you often wake up between 1AM and 3AM, especially during stressful periods, and then find it difficult to fall asleep again?

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, the period between 1AM and 3AM is traditionally associated with the Liver meridian. However, this does not mean that waking at this time automatically means there is something wrong with your physical liver.

In TCM, the Liver system is closely associated with the smooth movement of Qi and emotional regulation. When stress, frustration or emotional tension builds up, a pattern known as Liver Qi stagnation may sometimes be considered.

Why Stress May Affect Your Sleep

People who wake repeatedly between 1–3AM may also notice symptoms such as:

From a TCM perspective, these symptoms may suggest that stress is affecting the body’s normal balance.

However, not everyone who wakes at this time has the same TCM pattern. A physician will usually consider your overall symptoms, tongue, pulse, digestion, body temperature and emotional state before deciding on a treatment approach.

What If You Wake Up Feeling Hot?

If waking between 1–3AM is accompanied by symptoms such as night sweating, feeling hot, thirst, irritability or vivid dreams, other TCM patterns may need to be considered.

This may be particularly relevant during perimenopause or menopause, where sleep patterns and body temperature can change significantly.

Can Acupuncture Help With Sleep?

Acupuncture may be used as part of a personalised TCM treatment plan for people experiencing sleep difficulties.

The acupuncture points selected depend on the individual’s symptoms and TCM diagnosis rather than simply using the same treatment for everyone.

What About Chinese Herbal Medicine?

Chinese herbal medicine may also be considered after an individual TCM assessment.

Different herbal approaches may be used depending on whether the underlying pattern involves stress, heat, deficiency, digestive disturbance or other factors.

For this reason, it is better not to choose herbs purely because you wake at a certain time.

Does Waking at 2AM Mean My Liver Is Unhealthy?

Not necessarily.

The association between 1–3AM and the Liver comes from traditional TCM theory and should not be interpreted as evidence of liver disease.

Night waking can also be related to stress, caffeine, alcohol, reflux, pain, menopause, urinary frequency, medication, sleep apnoea or changes in sleep habits.

A Personalised Approach to Better Sleep

Repeatedly waking between 1AM and 3AM can be frustrating, especially when the mind becomes active the moment you wake.

In TCM, the time of waking is only one clue. A proper assessment looks at the whole person before determining the most appropriate treatment approach.

At YouHealth TCM Singapore, sleep concerns are assessed together with your stress levels, digestion, body constitution, tongue, pulse and other accompanying symptoms.

If you frequently wake between 1–3AM and struggle to return to sleep, you may consider speaking with Sinseh Goh about a personalised TCM approach to your sleep pattern.
